We began raising chickens to be able to meet our own families' need for meat and eggs.  We quickly learned that this was not always cheaper than just buying the same products from the store.  We researched how most commercial beef, pork and poultry is raised so cheaply and found that it is through large confinement operations (lots of animals in small buildings). These operations are typically sustained by medications to compensate for the poor environmental conditions of the animals.  Our research also revealed that the meat quality and nutrition were sacrificed in these conditions.
